Utah Youth Fencing League

The Utah Youth Fencing League began in 1999 as both an opportunity for recreational fencers to compete locally and a training ground for nationally minded athletes. In it’s nine years it has grown from 35 fencers to over 175 youth and 38 separate teams (including youth fencers from Idaho!

This year the league committee voted on a new format for team competitions. All teams (excluding Varsity) will compete on Saturday, January 26th. Teams will be seeded into an elimination table based on ratings and results from Utah Cup #1. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top three teams the same day.

The Season: The UYFL season begins in January and ends with the League Championships and an awards banquet in late April. Dual Meets and Individual Cups are held on Saturdays in locations near Kaysville, Park City and Utah County.

Team Dual Meets: Fencers are divided into teams based on age or grade. Each team member fences between one and three individual bouts to a team score of fourty-five touches or best of nine series (depending on age group). The Championship team (per age category) is calculated on a win-loss basis and recognized at the Awards Banquet at the end of the season.

Individual Utah Cups: Three Utah Cups are hosted throughout the season and are held on Saturdays. These tournaments are not team and provide an opportunity to earn Utah State Points and gain more individual competition experience. The format of these tournaments is a preliminary round with bouts to five touches followed by a direct elimination round where bouts are fenced either to fifteen touches (Junior and Y14) or the best two out of three five touch bouts (Y12, Y10, Y8).

League Championships and Awards Banquet: The championships are held in late April and include a tournament and awards banquet. All League members get a comemorative t-shirt, excellent food and are awarded for their participation and results throughout the season. This is a great opportunity to bring friends and family to share in your child’s experience (everyone leaves with something).

Membership Fee: Every fencer in the UYFL pays a $50.00 membership fee which includes entrance to ALL tournaments and the awards banquet. A very good deal!
